The Ugly Side of Youth Incarceration
Everyone seems to have an opinion on matters to do with youth incarceration and most of them are not agreeable. No matter how you look at it there is nothing to justify that locking up kids is a good idea. There is no public gain for having kids behind bars and it does a lot of harm to them as well. It is up to the adults to guide and protect kids and if the same adults are throwing them behind bars where those who have committed the worst crimes possible are there is nothing good that can come out of that. It should be more of rehabilitating and correcting them as opposed to punishing them in the worst way possible. There are a number of ways they can be made to learn a lesson as far as their mistakes go without putting them through the trauma of being behind bars.
On the same note, youth incarceration means there is a high possibility of them being coerced to join gangs. Remember that it is easy for them to be manipulated and if the government that is supposed to be protecting them throws them in prison they will be in the mercy of the worst criminals of all. By being shown a little attention and a promise of various things by these gangs, they can easily sprawl down the worst path and turning them back will even be harder. This can be avoided if the justice system chose to find better ways of rehabilitating kids without sending them to prison.
A lot of children who are sent to prison will lose hope even before they go through the doors. While young they should be given hope than things will turn out well for them. They have the option of choosing the path they want and chasing their dreams full of hope. Behind bars they will see the worst of humanity and losing hope comes next. Also, when they are locked they won’t be able to do much and by the time they are out their peers will have proceeded to do different things. When they look at the life their peers have and the fact that they have no way of getting back the time they have lost things can be worse. Thus, there is nothing good that can come from kid incarceration.
Some parents will just watch as their children are thrown in jail without doing anything because they don’t want the responsibility. Some think that it is teaching them a lesson but it is not the way to approach that. Parents need to teach their kids the behavior that is acceptable and that which isn’t. It will be giving the parents the easy way out if their kids are thrown in jail. People should get to know the responsibilities they will be assuming by having kids because it is not always rainbows and sunshine especially during the adolescent age and Sarah Westall has been fighting against this.
